Frequently asked questions
Do I need two devices?
Yes. One stays in your child's room as the baby unit; the other is yours. An older phone, a tablet or a laptop is perfect for the baby unit.
Can I mix Android, iPhone and computers?
Yes. Any combination works: iPhones, Android phones, tablets and computers with a browser.
Is MeiMei free?
Yes, on every device. Live view, talk-back and every alert are free. MeiMei Home keeps your nights (clips, summaries, trends) and MeiMei Away adds remote viewing and AI notes, both as subscriptions with a 7-day free trial.
Does my video go to the cloud?
No. On home Wi-Fi, video and sound go directly between your phones. With MeiMei Away, remote viewing passes through an encrypted relay that stores nothing.
Do I need an account?
No. MeiMei works without an account on your Wi-Fi. A free account adds alerts to a locked phone, and to a signed-in browser that has alerts switched on, even when its tab is in the background. On iPhone and iPad, add MeiMei to the Home Screen first.
What if the connection drops?
The parent device shows it at once, and the cloud service sends a Connection lost alert if the baby unit stops reporting.
Can I use MeiMei before the apps are out?
Yes. Open MeiMei in your browser on any two devices on the same Wi-Fi. It is free and needs no account.
Is MeiMei a medical device?
No. MeiMei is not a medical device and is not made for watching over a child who is unwell or needs medical care: such a child needs an adult with them at all times. If your child is struggling to breathe, turns blue or goes limp, call your emergency number.
How do I delete my data?
In Settings, Delete everything wipes both phones and deletes your account and everything our servers hold about your household.
Where are my clips stored?
Always on the baby unit itself, encrypted. They are never uploaded to our servers or any cloud. Parents watch them straight from the baby unit, and a clip leaves it only if you save it yourself.
Troubleshooting
Step-by-step help with pairing, placement, using MeiMei in a browser and alerts.
Pairing your devices
- Put both phones on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Some guest networks and mesh routers block phones from seeing each other ("client isolation"). Switch to your main network, or turn client isolation off in the router.
- If scanning the code fails, share the pairing link instead, or enter the address shown on the baby unit.
- The pairing code and link contain a secret. Share them only with people you trust.
Placing the baby unit
Keep the phone and its cable out of your child's reach, and follow the placement check in the app. The check cannot be skipped. No app replaces being close by.
Using MeiMei in a browser, without an account
- Open the same page on both phones and choose baby unit on one and parent on the other.
- Keep the browser tab open and the screen on. A locked phone or a closed tab ends the session. Nothing is saved in this mode.
- Allow the camera and microphone when the browser asks, on the baby unit.
- Without an account, alerts only reach a tab that is open. Clips and sleep reports need the app.
Signing in, and alerts to a browser
- Sign in with the e-mail one-time code, or with a password or passkey if you set one. A signed-in browser can be a baby unit or a parent device, mixed with phones, from anywhere.
- A parent can switch on alerts for a signed-in browser: tap the button and accept the browser's permission question. Alerts then also reach a tab in the background or closed (Web Push). Alerts are always free; a free account is enough.
- On iPhone and iPad this needs iOS 16.4 or newer. Add MeiMei to the Home Screen first (Share, then Add to Home Screen) and open it from there.
- To switch alerts off, use MeiMei's settings on that browser, or sign out. Signing out also ends the sign-in on that browser.
Alerts do not arrive
- Check that notifications are allowed for MeiMei in your phone's settings.
- Check that the baby unit is charging, connected and still running MeiMei.
- If the baby unit stops sending signals, MeiMei alerts you that the connection was lost. That alert is your safety net: do not silence it.
- For a browser: check that alerts are switched on in MeiMei, that the browser allows notifications for MeiMei, and, on iPhone and iPad, that MeiMei was added to the Home Screen.
Delete your account and data
In Settings, choose "Delete everything". It wipes both phones and deletes your account, your registered devices, your connection records and your household's video channel. You can also ask us to do it, through the contact address above.
