Baby monitor app keeps disconnecting or sends no alerts: fixes

A baby monitor is only useful if you can rely on it. When the picture freezes, the devices will not connect or an alert never arrives, the cause is usually one of a few things. This guide goes through them in order, for MeiMei in a browser.

Start with the basics

  • Without an account, both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Check the Wi-Fi name on each.
  • Keep the tab open and the screen on, on both devices. A hidden tab, a locked screen or a sleeping computer stops the watching.
  • Open MeiMei over https. The camera, the microphone and pairing only work on secure pages.
  • Use a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

No picture or no sound

  • Allow the camera and the microphone for the page: use the camera icon in the address bar or the browser's site settings.
  • Close any other app or tab that is using the camera or the microphone. Only one can use them at a time.
  • If you use an external webcam or headset, choose it from the camera and microphone lists on the baby unit and look at the preview.
  • If no camera is found, plug one in and try again.

The devices will not pair

  • Scan the QR code with the parent device's camera, or copy the pairing link and open it in the browser there.
  • Open the link on the parent device, not on the baby unit, and open it in a regular browser tab rather than inside another app's built-in viewer.
  • Make sure the baby unit is still showing its QR code and link, and has not been closed or restarted.
  • If it still fails, start again on both devices: reload the page on each and pair once more.

If the pairing link has been shared with someone who should not have it, start again on the baby unit to get a fresh one.

The picture freezes or stutters

  • Check the Wi-Fi signal where the baby unit sits. A weak signal there is the most common cause.
  • Move the baby unit or the router closer to each other, or add a better access point.
  • Pause other heavy use of the network, such as large downloads, while you check.
  • Check that the baby unit's screen has not gone to sleep; set its screen timeout to the longest value.

Alerts do not arrive

  • Without an account, alerts only reach a parent tab that is open. They cannot reach a locked phone.
  • A free account lets a parent switch on alerts for a signed-in browser, so they also reach a background or closed tab through Web Push.
  • On iPhone and iPad, browser alerts need iOS 16.4 or newer and MeiMei added to the Home Screen.
  • Check that the device is not in a mode that silences notifications, and that the browser is allowed to show them.
  • With a free account, MeiMei sends a Connection lost alert if the baby unit stops reporting.

MeiMei cannot guarantee that every alert arrives. If the baby unit loses Wi-Fi or runs out of battery, alerts stop.

On a laptop used as the baby unit

  • Keep the lid open. Closing it stops watching.
  • Plug the laptop in and turn off sleep in the power settings.
  • Keep the cable out of your child's reach and at least 1 m (3 ft) from every part of the crib.
  • Close programs that might take over the camera.

On an old phone used as the baby unit

  • Turn off battery savers that close or pause the browser.
  • Set the screen timeout to the longest value, or keep the phone on its charger with the cable out of reach.
  • Check the battery estimate that MeiMei shows before the session starts.
  • Restart the phone if the camera behaves strangely.

A test before every night

  1. Look at the picture on the parent device and check that the baby unit is where the placement check says.

  2. Make a sound near the baby unit and check that you get the alert.

  3. Check the battery or the charger, and that the cable is out of reach.

  4. Check that the parent device's sound is on and its screen will stay on.

If something still does not work, the support page lists more fixes and how to reach the team. MeiMei is not a medical device and does not replace watching your child yourself.

Safety comes first

How you place the baby unit matters more than any setting in the app. Read the placement and cable advice before your first night. MeiMei does not replace watching your child yourself.

Placement and safety

MeiMei is not a medical device and is not made for watching over a child who is unwell or needs medical care: such a child needs an adult with them at all times. If your child is struggling to breathe, turns blue or goes limp, call your emergency number.
