Free baby monitor app: what to check before you choose
Many baby monitor apps are free to download and not free to use. This guide is a neutral checklist for judging any app, followed by an honest account of what MeiMei includes for free and what it does not.
What "free" can mean
The word covers very different things:
- Free to download, with the useful features behind a subscription or a short trial.
- Free with advertising or trackers, paid for with your data and attention.
- Free, but only after you create an account.
- Free for the essentials, with optional paid extras for keeping history or looking in from far away.
The last kind is the one that fits a baby monitor best, because the parts that matter at night should not depend on a payment.
Ten questions to ask any app
- Are the alerts free, or only a preview of them?
- Can I use it without an account?
- Does it work with devices I already own, or do I need new hardware?
- Where do video and sound go: straight between my devices, or through the company's servers?
- Does it record anything, where is the recording kept and how do I delete it?
- Does it include advertising or analytics?
- What happens to monitoring when a subscription ends?
- Does it say plainly what it cannot do, and does it avoid health claims?
- Does it check how the device is placed and where the cable runs?
- Is there a way to delete my data and my account?
An app that is vague on several of these is worth a second look, however good the reviews.
How MeiMei answers
- Live view, talk-back, crying, coughing and movement detection and every alert are free on every device, always.
- No account is needed to start; a free account only adds alerts to a locked phone or a background tab.
- It uses phones, tablets and computers you already have, in any mix.
- Video and sound go directly between your devices on your Wi-Fi, and never through MeiMei's servers.
- Without a plan, nothing is recorded or saved. With MeiMei Home, clips stay on the baby unit only.
- There is no advertising and no analytics, and the website uses no cookies.
- A lapsed subscription never stops monitoring or alerts.
- It says what it does not do and makes no medical claims.
- The placement check, for distance and cable, comes before every session and cannot be switched off.
- "Delete everything" in Settings removes your account and data from the servers.
What free does not include
To be clear about the paid side:
- MeiMei Home keeps clips and a night timeline, summaries and trends, and allows more devices.
- MeiMei Away adds remote viewing over mobile data and AI notes about the night.
- A household without a plan has 1 parent device and 1 baby unit.
- Noticing that the phone was moved, and watching with the screen off, belong to the phone apps rather than the browser.
- Accounts and plans open when the apps launch; until then, MeiMei is free in your browser.
Prices are on the pricing page. Both plans start with a free trial and cover the whole household. Nothing in the free version is a trial that expires: live view, talk-back and every alert stay free.
Try it in five minutes
Open meimeimonitor.com/app/ on the device that stays with your child and choose "This device watches the child".
Open the same page on your own device and choose that it is for the parent.
Scan the QR code or open the pairing link, then complete the placement check.
Make a sound near the baby unit and watch the alert arrive.
Decide whether it does what you need, before you pay anything. Nothing needs to be paid for this.
What no app can do
- No baby monitor app is a medical device, and none replaces watching your child yourself.
- In a browser, the tab must stay open and the screen on, and alerts only reach an open tab unless you sign in and switch browser alerts on.
- The MeiMei apps for Android and iPhone are coming soon. They keep watching with the screen off and send alerts to a locked phone.
Placement matters more than any feature. The safety page explains where to put the baby unit and how to keep the cable out of reach.
Safety comes first
How you place the baby unit matters more than any setting in the app. Read the placement and cable advice before your first night. MeiMei does not replace watching your child yourself.
MeiMei is not a medical device and is not made for watching over a child who is unwell or needs medical care: such a child needs an adult with them at all times. If your child is struggling to breathe, turns blue or goes limp, call your emergency number.
