A baby monitor with no app and no account

You can start a baby monitor in under a minute without installing anything and without signing up. This guide explains how that works, what it means for your privacy, and what you can add later if you want more.

How the browser mode works

MeiMei runs in any current browser, so two devices are enough:

  • One device stays with your child and watches. It uses its camera and microphone.
  • The other is yours. It shows the live view and receives the alerts.
  • You pair them with a QR code or a link. Nothing is installed and no one asks for your name or e-mail address.

Open meimeimonitor.com/app/ on both devices to start.

What happens behind the scenes

  • Browsers cannot find each other on a network by themselves, so the devices meet through a small relay, using a room code that only your pairing link or QR code reveals.
  • Video and sound travel directly between the two devices when they are on the same Wi-Fi. They do not go through MeiMei's servers.
  • The devices agree on a secret key when they pair, and the messages between them are encrypted with it.
  • The room is removed shortly after the last device leaves.

What stays private

  • No account means no e-mail address, no password and no profile.
  • Nothing is recorded or saved: no clips and no sleep history. Events are shown while the session runs and then dropped.
  • The website and the app use no cookies and no analytics, and there are no ads or trackers.
  • The cloud relay sees a room code, device ids, timing and the network address of the connection, plus encrypted messages. It does not see video or sound.
  • The browser keeps its settings and the pairing secret in its own storage on that device, and never sends them to MeiMei.

The privacy guide goes through this in more detail.

Step by step

  1. On the device that stays with your child, open meimeimonitor.com/app/ and choose “This device watches the child”. Allow the camera and the microphone.

  2. On your own device, open the same page and choose that it is for the parent.

  3. Scan the QR code on the baby unit, or copy its pairing link and open it on the parent device.

  4. Complete the placement check on the baby unit and start the session.

What works with no account

  • Live view and talk-back.
  • Crying, coughing and movement detection.
  • Every alert, always free, shown on the parent device's screen.
  • The placement check before every session.
  • Phones, tablets and computers in any mix, on the same Wi-Fi.

What a free account adds

An account is for reaching you wherever you are in the house:

  • Alerts to a locked phone, and to a browser tab in the background. A parent can switch alerts on for a browser; on iPhone and iPad this needs iOS 16.4 or newer and MeiMei added to the Home Screen.
  • Devices that stay in one household, even when they are not on the same Wi-Fi.
  • A Connection lost alert if the baby unit stops reporting.

Alerts are free with or without an account. The account only gives MeiMei a way to deliver them to a screen that is off.

What a plan adds

Plans are for keeping and for looking in from far away. Everything above stays free.

  • MeiMei Home keeps clips on the baby unit for up to 30 nights, a night timeline, a morning summary and sleep trends over 14 nights, and allows up to 3 parent devices and 2 baby units.
  • MeiMei Away adds remote viewing over mobile data and AI notes about the night.

Accounts and plans open when the apps launch. Until then, MeiMei is free in your browser.

Limits of the browser mode

  • Keep the tab open and the screen on. Watching stops when the tab is in the background, the device locks or a laptop goes to sleep.
  • Without an account, both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi, and alerts only reach a tab that is open.
  • Browsers cannot pin the screen or sense that the device was moved.
  • The MeiMei apps for Android and iPhone are coming soon. They keep watching with the screen off and send alerts to a locked phone.

MeiMei is not a medical device and does not replace watching your child yourself.

Safety comes first

How you place the baby unit matters more than any setting in the app. Read the placement and cable advice before your first night. MeiMei does not replace watching your child yourself.

Placement and safety

MeiMei is not a medical device and is not made for watching over a child who is unwell or needs medical care: such a child needs an adult with them at all times. If your child is struggling to breathe, turns blue or goes limp, call your emergency number.
