Lullabies and white noise on a baby monitor

The baby unit has a speaker, so it can do more than listen. MeiMei’s Soothe tab lets you play lullabies, white noise and your own playlists on it from your phone, and listen to what it is playing. This guide covers how it works, how to keep the volume sensible and where to put the unit.

What Soothe is

Soothe is one of the four tabs of a baby unit’s screen on the parent device, next to Live, Tonight and Settings. What you choose there plays on the baby unit, not on your phone. It offers:

  • 50 lullabies, including classic melodies, from soft piano, harp and music box to ocean and rain beds and humming.
  • White noise, a steady sound for the room.
  • Playlists you make from the lullabies and white noise, kept on the baby unit.
  • With MeiMei Home or Away, your own songs and voice recordings.

The lullabies, white noise and playlists are free, on every device, with or without an account.

Play a lullaby or white noise

  1. Open the baby unit on your parent device and choose the Soothe tab.

  2. Choose White noise, or Lullaby for a random one, or pick a song from the list of built-in lullabies. Off stops the sound.

  3. The first time a song plays, the baby unit downloads it from meimeimonitor.com and keeps it, so it needs an internet connection that once and plays without one afterwards.

  4. Set the volume with the slider. The sleep timer stops the sound after 15, 30 or 60 minutes, and Repeat and Shuffle choose how the songs follow each other.

The Now playing card shows the song, the time and the buttons to pause, skip and go back.

Make a playlist

A playlist is a short list of songs and sounds, in the order you choose.

  • Open Playlists in the Soothe tab, tick the lullabies and the white noise you want and put them in order with the arrow buttons.
  • Give the playlist a name and save it. Choose it later with one tap and it plays as one queue.
  • Playlists are kept on the baby unit, so every parent device in the household sees the same lists. A parent can have up to 20 playlists of up to 100 items.
  • Your own songs can be in a playlist too. If a plan ends, they stay in the list and are skipped until you subscribe again.

Listen to what is playing

Next to the Now playing card is the button “Listen to what’s playing”. It sends what the baby unit plays to your phone, so you can check what the room hears.

  • It carries only the sound the baby unit plays, never the room’s microphone and never your own voice.
  • It is separate from Sound in the Live tab, which lets you listen to the room. Both can be on at once, each with its own volume, and your phone’s own volume applies.
  • It switches off by itself when the baby unit stops playing, and when you have been away from the Soothe tab for more than a minute.

Volume

  • Start quiet and raise the volume slowly. A phone speaker is small and close to the crib in a quiet room, so a low setting is usually enough.
  • Use “Listen to what’s playing” and your own ears to judge the level, then stand at the crib and check it there.
  • Keep it low enough that you can still hear the room, and low enough that it would not be uncomfortable next to your own ear.
  • Use the sleep timer so the sound does not play all night without you choosing that.

MeiMei cannot tell you what volume is right for your child. If you are unsure, ask your pediatrician.

Where to put the baby unit

  • Follow the placement rules first: high on a wall or shelf, at least 1 m (3 ft) from the crib, with the cable out of reach. Sound does not change those rules.
  • Do not cover the speaker with a case, a cloth or a shelf edge, and do not point it straight at the crib.
  • The baby unit’s microphone sits on the same device as its speaker. Music played very loudly close to it makes the room harder to hear.
  • MeiMei compares what the unit plays with what its microphone hears, and uses its own echo cancellation, so the music itself should not set off a loud-noise alert. If alerts fire while music plays, lower the volume or move the unit.

Crying, coughing and babbling are still recognised while sound plays, but a loud sound close to the microphone can hide them.

What to know

  • Sound from the baby unit does not keep a child safe, and MeiMei makes no such claim. It is a comfort some families like, nothing more.
  • The baby unit must be connected for you to change what plays. In a browser, its tab must stay open and its screen on.
  • Lullabies and white noise are free. Your own songs and voice recordings need MeiMei Home or Away.
  • MeiMei is not a medical device and does not replace watching your child yourself.

Safety comes first

How you place the baby unit matters more than any setting in the app. Read the placement and cable advice before your first night. MeiMei does not replace watching your child yourself.

Placement and safety

MeiMei is not a medical device and is not made for watching over a child who is unwell or needs medical care: such a child needs an adult with them at all times. If your child is struggling to breathe, turns blue or goes limp, call your emergency number.
