Clips and sound clips with your alerts

An alert tells you something happened. With MeiMei Home or Away it can also show you: a short video for things you can see, or a 5-second sound clip for sounds. This guide explains which alerts come with media, how to play it, and where it lives.

Two kinds of clip

  • A video clip is a short recording from the baby unit’s camera, made around the moment of the alert.
  • A sound clip is five seconds of sound: 2.5 seconds before the alert and 2.5 seconds after, so you hear what led up to it.
  • Both are part of MeiMei Home and Away. Without a plan, the baby unit records nothing, not even in memory, and the alert arrives without media.

Clips stay on the baby unit, encrypted, for up to 30 nights or 2 GB. They are never uploaded to MeiMei’s servers or to any other cloud.

Which alerts come with a video

A video is kept only where there is something to see:

  • Movement in the camera view that goes on for a couple of seconds.
  • The baby unit being moved, picked up, covered or left, and the camera being covered.
  • Crying that lasts longer than 60 seconds.
  • Urgent alerts that have something to show, such as the baby unit getting too hot.

Quiet changes in the timeline, a low battery or a change of light do not keep a video.

Which alerts come with a sound clip

  • Coughing, a loud noise and other sound alerts.
  • A crying alert, as well as its video when the crying lasts longer than a minute.
  • The clip is saved a few seconds after the alert, because it needs the 2.5 seconds that follow. The alert itself never waits for it.

A sound alert keeps a sound clip even when it is urgent, because there is nothing to see.

Watch and listen

  1. When an alert arrives, it shows “Loading the clip…” while the clip is saved.

  2. Tap Watch the clip, or Listen to the sound. Nothing plays by itself, because it may be the middle of the night.

  3. The clip plays inside the alert. You can close it and play it again.

  4. Later, find it in the Tonight tab by tapping the event, or in Clips, which lists everything the baby unit kept.

Tapping a notification opens Tonight on that event, so the clip is one tap away.

Without a plan

  • The alert arrives as usual, with its text and its place in the timeline, but without a video or a sound clip.
  • Nothing is recorded, not even in memory, so there is nothing to find later.
  • Once in a while, the details of an alert that would have carried media say so, quietly: MeiMei Home adds a short video, or the sound itself, to alerts.
  • Alerts themselves are always free. A plan only decides whether the moment is kept.

You can look at your plan in Settings, under Plan. Both plans start with a free trial and cover your whole household.

In a browser

  • With a plan, clips, sound clips and sleep reports work in a browser too, on the baby unit and on the parent device.
  • A browser baby unit keeps its clips in the browser’s own storage, sealed with a key that stays in that browser, and never uploads them.
  • A browser records only while its tab is open, and the browser may clear what it stores, so do not rely on an old clip being there.
  • In a private window the storage may be lost when the window closes.

Keep and delete

  • The oldest clips go first when the 30 nights or the 2 GB are used up. Clips you marked as favourites are kept.
  • You can delete a clip in Clips. A clip leaves the baby unit only if you save it yourself.
  • In Settings, under Data and privacy, Delete everything also removes the clips on your devices.

Limits

  • A clip is a short view of one moment. It cannot tell you whether something is wrong.
  • A dark room gives a dark video. A dim, warm night light helps; see the placement guide.
  • MeiMei cannot guarantee that every alert, or every clip, arrives.
  • MeiMei is not a medical device and does not replace watching your child yourself.

Safety comes first

How you place the baby unit matters more than any setting in the app. Read the placement and cable advice before your first night. MeiMei does not replace watching your child yourself.

Placement and safety

MeiMei is not a medical device and is not made for watching over a child who is unwell or needs medical care: such a child needs an adult with them at all times. If your child is struggling to breathe, turns blue or goes limp, call your emergency number.
